A time when men sold their souls for a bag of gold and women sold their bodies for a place to sleep. Angel expects nothing from men but betrayal. Sold into prostitution as a child, she survives by keeping her hatred alive. And what she hates most are the men who use her, leaving her empty and dead inside.   Then she meets Michael Hosea, a man who seeks his Father’s heart in everything. Michael obeys God’s call to marry Angel and to love her unconditionally. Slowly, day by day, he defies Angel’s every bitter expectation, until despite her resistance, her frozen heart begins to thaw.   But with her unexpected softening comes overwhelming feelings of unworthiness and fear. And so Angel runs. Back to the darkness, away from her husband’s pursuing love, terrified of the truth she no longer can deny: Her final healing must come from the One who loves her even more than Michael does…the One who will never let her go.   A powerful retelling of the story of Gomer and Hosea, Redeeming Love is a life-changing story of God’s unconditional, redemptive, all-consuming love.Includes a six-part reading group guide!

Book Redeeming Love: A Novel Review :

I'm agnostic but have a deep respect for those who believe in God. None of the mentions or discussions about God really bothered me about this book. What irritated me was the feminism issues. There were many times throughout the book that I would get angry. First of all, Angel never agrees (or if you say she does its under much distress, nearly unconscious, and delirious) to marrying Micheal. Why do they have to get married right then? It obviously isn't to protect her "reputation" as she is already a whore. Angel is trapped in a marriage she didn't want. We are suppose to believe that Micheal is an honorable man because he waits to have sex with her until it isn't a chore. But he took "why not?" as an acceptable answer for consent. Angel has been through a lifetime of abuse. We are suppose to believe that that has made her bitter and hardhearted towards God. But what many fail to realize is that victims are usually more capable of spotting abuse than people who haven’t been traumatized. Secondly, I hate how many times Micheal forces himself on her. She backs away, runs away, tells him no, resists him and still he kisses her, holds her, ect. It perpetuates a myth that women don't know what they want. If a woman says no, she doesn't really mean it. And the man is suppose to push and then when he assaults her she feels a "betraying warmth." Micheal tells her that she belongs to him—that she is his wife, and that means he owns her. Third, and maybe this is the one that made me the most angry. The author goes into a lot of detail about the characters sexual abuses in her life. And when Micheal "saves her" (though he does so by force) the focus of her relationships with the other characters are defined on how they forgive her for being a whore. She wasn't a pure woman of good reputations and Micheal should have never looked in her direction. However, it is apparent that the culture and society that this takes place has a hyper awareness of woman's sexuality. Women must be pure. Men, however, aren't held up to this standard. It was perfectly acceptable that Paul went to brothels for "release." He was just as "dirty" and "tainted" as Angel. Yet, her sexuality was the focus of the book. And Paul is portrayed as a decent man despite that fact that he has sex with his brother-in-laws wife. Fourth, Angel creates a BEAUTIFUL program to help others and abandoned it to return to the man. Why didn't Micheal come to her, help her, support her business, give up on his hopes and dreams instead of Angel doing so for him? Micheal never asks what she wants. Also, why is she always taking off her clothes as a sign of repentance and act of being pure? Fifth, the book creates unreal expectations about love and sex. Michael tells Angel that he knew how to please her when they first had sex—despite being a good Christian virgin with zero knowledge of female anatomy—because he had read the Song of Solomon. No, really.Angel just wants independence the entire book but she gives it up to be shaped by Micheal into the kind of woman a man wants. We are suppose to believe its love though. Also, the whole voice of God narrative is a little much. The book is an easy read. But once I stopped and thought about the messaging: women belonging to men, men protecting women, gender roles, romanticized kidnapping, sex trafficking, child porn and sex, God-man-woman umbrella, sexual assault, and sexual abuse I just decided that this book's messages were really irritating to a woman who believes in equality in marriage and support and trust in fulfilling each other's dreams.
I read Redeeming Love based on my best friend's constant suggestion to do so. I rarely read anymore because I am too busy and know that if I start, I run the risk of not being able to put the book down if it is that good. But for some reason after my friend recently referred to the book's amazing character "Michael" during a conversation regarding the topic of marriages...I just went online and ordered it. It arrived on Sunday and I finished all 450+ pages by 7AM Tuesday morning. I thought the book was incredibly powerful. The [long] beginning is very challenging to get through (rough, tragic, disturbing) but I'm glad I stuck with it because I found myself---in the beginning the middle and end---weeping for the characters in the book and also weeping (in a good healing way) with how it made me look at my own marriage. The main characters are Michael, Angel, and God (though his subtle but main storyline is not introduced until Michael's is) . Based on reviews, a handful of readers missed the opportunity to see that Michael does not have to represent all men, and Angel all women. Some reviewers resented Angel being cast in such a horribly "submissive" position throughout. But first, these readers should remember this story takes place during the time of the goldrush when women were not treated equal and were in submissive positions...but second, readers should note that is not how God saw her. The storyline is not at all about women's rights but instead about God's love. The big point is that God will communicate to those [lucky people who listen for him] that He wants them----those who are still safely in the confines of his herd--- to stop at nothing to bring those who are not (those who are the lost sheep), back to him.Ironically, as it turned out, I identified more with Michael and his story...even though I am a woman. If you take this story only as a romance (as it is written), and don't realize that God's talking to / trying to reach these characters is a bigger storyline, then you miss the powerful message of this book.....that God's love is limitless and powerful...and unrelenting. He will never abandon you even when it may seem that way with certain trials you may endure. Redeeming Love conveyed just that, yet while gripping my attention the way any well-written captivating story would.
